FAQ

Common
questions

What can I expect during a pelvic health assessment?

Your first visit starts with a discussion of your concerns and goals, followed by a physical evaluation. Your therapist will assess your movements, strength, and range of motion, and they may conduct an internal vaginal or rectal exam. Afterward, your therapist will discuss the findings, build a custom treatment plan, and begin your initial treatment.

What does an internal exam involve?

Your therapist will first explain the process, risks, and alternatives to obtain your informed consent. You will be given private time to undress from the waist down and cover yourself with a clean drape sheet on the treatment table. The exam is conducted using sterile lubricant and gloves, involving a visual check and gentle internal manual assessment without any medical tools or speculums.

Is an internal exam mandatory?

An internal examination is never required, but it is highly recommended because it is the international gold standard for pelvic floor care. Since most of your pelvic floor muscles are located inside your body, this exam allows us to accurately assess the area. If you feel uncomfortable with an internal exam, please let your therapist know so we can use alternative external techniques.

Do you treat men?

Yes, men have pelvic floors too and we treat male anatomy and conditions. Our physiotherapists are fully trained to treat conditions like benign prostatitis, pelvic pain, and post-prostatectomy recovery. A rectal exam may be recommended during your assessment depending on your specific symptoms and goals.

Can I come to physiotherapy while on my period?

Yes, you can absolutely attend your appointment while menstruating. In fact, it can sometimes be beneficial for your therapist to observe how hormonal fluctuations and your period affect your pelvic floor symptoms.

Do I need a doctor's referral?

You do not need a doctor's referral to see a physiotherapist. However, if you have extended health benefits, please check with your provider, as some insurance companies require a physician's note to reimburse your visits.
